Monthly, 6d. Founded, published and edited by the entrepreneurial journalist W. T. Stead, this \u2018scissors-and-paste\u2019 publication aimed to \u2018sift through the mass of periodical literature for those articles that merited republishing\u2019. It was meant to be \u2018a digest of the heterogeneous content of the periodicals\u2019 and as such is particularly valuable as an index to historical discourse in the periodical press. (See <em>DNCJ<\/em>, where all quotations appear, for further information and references to additional sources.)<\/p>\n\t<hr>\n\n  \u201cThe Science of History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 2, no. 7: (July 1890): 49.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Subtitled \u2018Must it be based on statistics?\u2019 the article reports an essay by Henri Berr in <i>Nouvelle Revue. <\/i>Berr discusses the new approach to history as more of a science than accounts of great men and heroes.\n  \u201cThe Teaching of History in America.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 3, no. 15: (March 1891): 264.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Reports on an article by John Jay in <i>Magazine of American History <\/i>on the importance of teaching American history in the United States. Comments on reluctance of Australian authorities to teach history because of doctrinal differences.\n  \u201cHow to Teach History in Schools.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 3, no. 18: (June 1891): 584.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Discusses the teaching of history in elementary school in both Britain and its colonies and compares it to the German approach. Reports an article by Lucy Maynard Salmon in <i>Educational Review, <\/i>&#8220;The Teaching of History in Elementary School&#8221;. Here the editor awards prizes to the best of almost 30 lists sent in. A Welsh reader, T. C. Phillips, sent in a list of 260 poems annotated with dates of both the author and the event discussed. Third prize went to H. W. V. Temperley of Cambridge (the historian was 18 at the time).\n  \u201cHistory of the Commonwealth.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 0, no. 0: (November 1897): 527.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  The \u2018Notable Books\u2019 column notices the second volume of Samuel Rawson Gardiner\u2019s <i>History of the Commonwealth and Protectorate<\/i> (Longman).\n  \u201cHumours of History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 0, no. 0: (February 1898): 189.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  \u2018Some Noteable Books of the Month\u2019 very briefly notices this book by Arthur Moreland (reprinted from the <i>Morning Leader) <\/i>of 120 drawings in pen and ink.\n  \u201cHow Animals Have Made History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 0, no. 0: (June 1898): 579.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Reports on an article in <i>Nouvelle Revue <\/i>by Rodocanachi, about the influence of various animals throughout the history of the world. Offers various anecdotes.\n  \u201cMacaulay\u2019s History of England.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 0, no. 0: (September 1898): 313.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  The \u2018Some Notable Books of the Month\u2019 column notes the \u2018republication . . . in a new form\u2019 by Longman, in the \u2018Albion Macaulay\u2019 edition at 3s6d. The type and price are commended but the loss of \u2018side-headings\u2019 is regretted.\n  \u201cSnapshots of French History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 0, no. 0: (November 1899): 524\u201325.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Comments on <i>The Memoirs of Victor Hugo<\/i> (Heinemann), noting that the work is more of a snapshot of French history in the early 19th century than a memoir of one man.\n  \u201cSouth Africa: Its History, Heroes, and Wars.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 22, no. 0: (July 1900): 92.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Brief comment on the English edition (by Horace Marshall &amp; Son) of William Douglas Mackenzie\u2019s book (already noticed in its American edition). States that this work is very useful as it presents its subject with clarity and in a well-balanced manner. M\u2019Dougall\u2019s book, <i>Songs of the Church, with Stories of Their Writers <\/i>(Charles H. Kelly), is interesting and original; also discusses the content of Rowland E. Prothero\u2019s book, <i>The Psalms in Human Life <\/i>(John Murray).\n  \u201cModern History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 29, no. 172: (April 1904): 395.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  The column \u2018Other Books of the Month\u2019 reports admiringly on Spencer Walpole\u2019s <i>The History of Twenty-Five Years <\/i>(Longman).\n  \u201cModern History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 29, no. 174: (June 1904): 617.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  The column \u2018Some Leading Books of the Month\u2019 includes books on India, Japan, Afghanistan and Servia.\n  \u201cHistory from Advertisements.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 31, no. 181: (January 1905): 60.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Reports on an article in <i>Nord und S\u00fcd<\/i> (by Otto von Linde) giving an account of the 18th-century conjurer Gustav Katterfelto. Linde\u2019s study was based primarily upon advertisements in the London dailies.\n  \u201cLocal History in Our Schools.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 31, no. 183: (March 1905): 283.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Discusses an article in the <i>Contemporary Review <\/i>by Patrick Geddes, on \u2018Civic Education and City Development\u2019 which observed that children could and should learn history through civic buildings. The editor suggests the publication of a \u2018simply but vividly-written primer, with pictures\u2019 for each large city. Geddes also recommended photography as an exercise for the study of history and cities.\n  \u201cA Plea for the Study of Local History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 32, no. 187: (July 1905): 64.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Brief notice of an article by Ramsay Muir in <i>University Review, <\/i>&#8220;a wise and cogent plea for the study of local history&#8221;; applauds the Victoria County histories and notes the successful school in Liverpool.\n  \u201cHistory in Pageant.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 35, no. 208: (April 1907): 411.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Anticipating a Pageant of Kings and Queens to occur at Oxford in June 1907, the <i>Pall Mall Gazette <\/i>has published an article by Dion Clayton Calthrop on clothes and colour in history.\n  \u201cLord Acton\u2019s History Assailed.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 35, no. 209: (May 1907): 525.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  The \u2018leading Articles in the Reviews\u2019 column discusses an <i>Edinburgh Review<\/i> critique of Lord Acton\u2019s recent lectures on modern history.\n  \u201cThe Most Calamitous Event in History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 35, no. 209: (May 1907): 502.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Discusses two articles about the French Revolution. First in <i>Atlantic Monthly, <\/i>by Goldwin Smith, then in <i>Revue des Deux Mondes <\/i>by Henri Taine. Both are described as being occasioned by the call for a 3rd edition of A. H. Beesly\u2019s <i>Life of Danton.<\/i>\n  \u201cOutline Maps for Teaching History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 37, no. 221: (May 1908): 522.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Favourable comment on a set of charts produced by George Pringle and H. R. Morris, which \u2018do for the teaching of history what the atlas does for the teaching of geography.\u2019 The maps are published at Stead\u2019s Publishing House.\n  \u201cThe Feuilleton and Its History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 39, no. 229: (January 1909): 58.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Reports on an article in <i>Velhagen<\/i>, in which Tony Kellen discusses the history of this component of the French newspaper in the contexts of both France and Germany.\n  \u201cHistory Day by Day and Every Day.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 40, no. 237: (September 1909): 297\u2013300.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  A four-page article by the Editor (i.e. W. T. Stead) about publications in two different media which are \u2018for sale in my publishing house.\u2019 First noticed is the schoolmaster F. W. Green\u2019s book, <i>History Day by Day<\/i>, a calendar of events in British history. Second is a series of portrait postcards, the article entitled \u2018An Historical Portrait Gallery in Every House.\u2019 Stead explains that he has purchased several of a French series, which he describes as:&#8221;an attempt to utilise the postcard as a kind of popular Valhalla or memorial temple of the illustrious dead.&#8221; They range from Julius Caesar to the end of the 19th century. He has imported sets of cards from France and sells them at a shilling a dozen throughout the world. Set side-by-side they make \u2018an effective frieze\u2019. 16 of the cards are reproduced.\n  \u201cThe History of Football.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 42, no. 249: (September 1910): 251.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  In the column \u2018Leading Articles in the Reviews\u2019 appears a report on an article by Percy S. Jones published in <i>The State of South Africa. <\/i>Discusses the history of football from the middle ages to the present.\n  \u201cHow Mark Twain Came to Read History.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 45, no. 265: (January 1912): 49.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  The \u2018Leading Articles\u2019 column reports on an article in <i>Harper\u2019s <\/i>by A.B. Paine, which is about Mark Twain\u2019s reading habits and how his interest in historical writing was awakened by a chance encounter with a scrap of narrative about Joan of Arc.\n  \u201cA History of Socialism in England.\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 47, no. 278: (February 1913): 221\u201322.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Review of Max Beer\u2019s <i>Geschichte des Sozialismus in England<\/i> ( by J.H.W. Examples include the concept of the Bastille as \u2018the last home of an infamous feudalism.\u2019 A second article, \u2018Bacon Belittled\u2019 reports on an article in <i>The Philosophical Review <\/i>by Lynn Thorndike, which diminishes Francis Bacon\u2019s reputation for achievement.\n  \u201cAncient History, Or Modern Geography?\u201d <i>Review of Reviews<\/i>, 53, no. 315: (March 1916): 226.\n     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  Reports on an article in <i>Nineteenth Century<\/i> by Harry Johnston, on \u2018Education and the Public Services\u2019. The present war is going badly because young Germans have been better educated than young Englishmen.
