Existing cultural heritage digitization and archival methods lack the richness and versatility that is necessary for using library memorabilia and ephemera. At the same time, emerging interaction technologies that bridge the physical and digital worlds offer opportunities to provide users with rich sensory experiences. Our research brings these two domains together to investigate how tangible and augmented reality interaction design can help to address some of the challenges that scholars face when working with ephemera and memorabilia collections.\u00a0<\/span>Our first use case focuses on a collection of Jewish and Holocaust ephemera and memorabilia. In this presentation, we describe our ongoing research in this area, including a formative study that we conducted to better understand current practices and challenges in cultural heritage\u00a0<\/span>research, as well as prototype designs for the Tangible Augmented Reality Archives (TARA) application that supports discoverability and use of library and archival artifacts.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Winter 2021, in place of the drop-in hours it holds at its space in TMU University Library, the Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) will be holding weekly virtual drop-in sessions on Thursdays from 3-4 pm (usually on Zoom). These are intended as casual, fun events that bring together the DH community at TMU and beyond during COVID-19 restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Week 2, <\/span>DH Workbench<\/span><\/i>, will be a led, shared exploration of a digital resource or tool for research and\/or pedagogy. Week 3, <\/span>DH@TMU Reads<\/span><\/i>, will be an open discussion of a selected work of DH scholarship, read in advance of the drop-in.
